I’ve worked for clients in many different ways over the years, however I can help them make a difference. Click on each of the areas below to learn more about what kind of work I do, or:

  • Sometimes you just need a little help getting your thoughts onto the page.

Whether you’re struggling to find the right words, or just need some additional capacity during a busy time, I can deliver compelling copy that educates, motivates or captivates.

I approach writing projects like a campaigner — What’s the change we’re trying to make? Who’s the audience we need to move? Are we persuading, shaming, or motivating? When I join a project as a writer, I also join as a strategic partner.

I can write for you, or assist in the writing of:

    • Op-eds and essays.

    • Speeches and talking points.

    • Press releases and media pitches.

    • Core messages or message guides.

    • Long-form reports.

    • Website or social media copy.

    • Ad or video scripts

    • Grant proposals.

    • Mass emails or newsletters.

I'll help you find your voice.

  • What is the essence of what you do? What is the change you want to see in the world? What is the one action you can ask everyone to take?

You need short, compelling answers to these questions for your members, your clients, your supporters, and the press. Done right, they will become core to your work and identity, both internally and externally.

Through landscape analysis, stakeholder interviews, and iterative creative design, I can help you find the one perfect sentence you need to say in every meeting.

  • We live in a time of dueling narratives, when what’s real and what’s important depends on the larger set of stories that make up the public debate. Narrative change is about perceiving, understanding, and shifting those narratives strategically.

It’s the work you’re already doing, but smarter.

My well-received trainings can help you and your team build the skills you need to change narratives. I’ve been training and coaching folks on media and messaging since my time in Congress, and I’ve seen firsthand the impact that compelling, well-delivered messages can have.

I offer interactive, hands-on trainings both in person and virtually, in small groups or one-on-one. Large group presentations are also available on related topics. References and testimonials available on request.

I can create bespoke to fit your precise needs, or choose from one of my existing training options below:

    • Narrative Change 101 — Learn about the basic concepts of narrative change and how you can make it part of your work.

    • Narrative Change 102 — Get trained in how to develop a new narrative that works for you and your community.

    • Building your Message and Staying on it — This training explores tools for developing a strong, compelling message and helps you practice sticking to it.

    • Media Training Intensive — A half-day or full-day session practicing in person, on-camera interviews to get ready for your moment as a leader and voice for your cause.

    • Writing Workshop — How do you write an op-ed? A speech? A one-sentence slogan? Through either one-on-one coaching or small group work I help you build skills in writing social change copy that’s clear, compelling, and concise.

You can read more about what’s offered in each of these trainings by clicking here.

  • I’ve been strategizing and writing video-based advocacy and political ads for almost 20 years. In the past, executing those strategies required hiring expensive professionals with specialized equipment. Nothing could be done unless you had very deep pockets.

All of that has changed. Using affordable online tools and AI-generated video and voiceover, I can now help you create quality, affordable video for organic and paid social media channels at a fraction of the cost of legacy systems.

Online video is the currency of our time, and almost any campaign that attempts to influence broad public opinion without a video strategy is doomed to failure. Most small- to mid-sized nonprofit organizations have either been operating with outmoded social media strategies or neglecting video altogether, believing it too expensive. It doesn’t have to be that way.

    My services include:

    • Short-form video conception, scripting, and production involving client-filmed content, stock footage, or AI-generated content.

    • Meta (Facebook and Instagram) ad strategy and placement.

    • Ad testing and evaluation.

I have partnerships available for more rigorous polling and research for clients who want to measure impact more scientifically.

  • Planning an effective social change campaign is not just about passion. It’s about understanding that, as Frederick Douglass said, “power concedes nothing without a demand.”

With over 25 years of experience in journalism, politics, and activism, I know what it takes to move the needle. I can help you plan and execute an effective grassroots or advocacy campaign, or help you focus your communications plan to leverage your strengths and reach the audiences key to your goals.

  • Strong campaigns that want to build and wield power almost always need to do press, and press is itself a way to build and wield power.

I approach media relations from a campaigner’s perspective. I don’t want to get you into the paper just because we’re checking a box—I want to do it because it serves your campaign or organization. That means smart, targeted pitches that advance your message to the right audiences.

With experience in national media and the support of a network of other freelance consultants, I specialize in supporting small- to mid-sized campaigns, organizations or non-profits. We’re here to work with clients who want top-notch service but can’t afford or attract the service of a marquee national firm.
